I see you’ve found my website.

WELCOME!!!! I’m so glad you’re here (truly). My name is Kanako Okiron and I am a 15 years old indie author-illustrator from Hobart, Tasmania. I am proudly biracial, of Japanese-Australian descent. My writing has been featured in the Weekend Australian Review, The Examiner, The Mercury and The Hobart Magazine, as well as radio and podcasts! I love cats, talking about philosophy and gazing at anything that will catch my eye. And I’m usually approachable (nothing is for sure).

I write.

I’ve been writing stories by hand since I was six years old, mostly Thea Stilton fan fiction before I knew what fan fiction meant. I would write a whole bunch on a sheet of paper before folding it in half and sticky taping it with the next page. I could have been my own publishing house! No kidding.
At the age of ten, I had a strong desire to be published for a story that became my debut novel, Not Like in the Movies. I opted for self-publishing and I’m very glad for choosing that route!
My favourite genres are contemporary fiction and humour. I feel like everything in life, including books, can’t be fully enjoyed unless there’s a sprinkle of humour in there. Humour is like the salt or sugar of literary works - its optional, but without it, the book tastes a bit bland. Which is why I incorporate funny bits in my book, which I guess also just comes naturally, to me and to many other authors!
My mind is in a constant void for book ideas, whether I’m twiddling my thumbs, slicing open an avocado or struggling to fall asleep.
I’m likely writing a story while you’re reading this, or more likely eating.

I draw.

If anything could make me fall in love with more than writing, ‘tis drawing. I will draw on anything I can get my hands on. Since the age of two, I’ve scribbled on scrap paper, walls, books and newspapers, so much that I’ve been banned from using all pens by my parents.
Just kidding, but yeah. Follow me on Instagram to see my cartoons, sketches and random doodles that don’t make any sense. And I do take commissions!

One more thing…

I understand that we are living in very difficult times right now, and sometimes books have to be cut from the list of purchases. Therefore, no matter where you are in the world, I am happy to send a FREE digital copy of my debut novel over if you contact me via email! It is not compulsory to leave a review on Amazon/Goodreads, however I would strongly suggest doing so if you have a spare minute to help me figure out how my writing could be improved! Thank you!
